Mechirat (Sale of) Chametz
Before Pesach it is a requirement to eliminate all Chametz - leaven - from our possession. Halacha, Jewish law, does allow for Chametz (e.g. liquors, mixtures, etc.) to be sold to a non-Jew when elimination is not an easy option. Arrangements for such sale can be made through Rabbi Akiva Weiss, Hillel's OU-JLIC Rabbi, using the contract below.
If you prefer, we welcome you to visit us at the office to complete the transaction in person and encourage you to arrange an appointment with Rabbi Weiss during the week. Your submission must be made by Thursday March 29, 2018. You can also drop off or mail in a paper form to the office directly by Wednesday March 28th, 2018. (click here to download).
This year, Pesach 5778/2018, the general sale of Chametz will take effect on Friday morning, March 30th before 11:30am. All Chametz which was not sold must be burned by 11:42am on Friday morning.
We never accept personal monetary gifts for this service. We do however welcome Ma’ot Chittim (donations for Passover needs of our students or the needy) and contributions, cash or checks can be made out to Hillel at Binghamton with "Ma’ot Chittim" in the memo. All funds go to Pesach needs of students on campus here at Binghamton University. You may also donate online when you sell your Chametz or by clicking here.
NOTE: Kitniyot (food made from legumes which are not eaten by Ashkenazim on Pesach) need not be sold. Utensils used for Chametz should not be sold.
IMPORTANT: After submitting the form, you will receive an email from Rabbi Weiss confirming that your form has been processed. If for any reason you do not get the confirmation email, please contact the office for assistance.
