Sale of Chametz Form

Mechirat (Sale of) Chametz

Before Pesach it is a requirement to eliminate all Chametz - leaven -  from our possession. Halacha, Jewish law, does allow for Chametz (e.g. liquors, mixtures, etc.) to be sold to a non-Jew when elimination is not an easy option. Arrangements for such sale can be made through Rabbi Akiva Weiss, Hillel's OU-JLIC Rabbi, using the contract below.

If you prefer, we welcome you to visit us at the office to complete the transaction in person and encourage you to arrange an appointment with Rabbi Weiss during the week. Your submission must be made by Thursday March 29, 2018. You can also drop off or mail in a paper form to the office directly by Wednesday March 28th, 2018. (click here to download).

This year, Pesach 5778/2018, the general sale of Chametz will take effect on Friday morning, March 30th before 11:30am. All Chametz which was not sold must be burned by 11:42am on Friday morning.

We never accept personal monetary gifts for this service. We do however welcome Ma’ot Chittim (donations for Passover needs of our students or the needy) and contributions, cash or checks can be made out to Hillel at Binghamton with "Ma’ot Chittim" in the memo. All funds go to Pesach needs of students on campus here at Binghamton University. You may also donate online when you sell your Chametz or by clicking here.

NOTE: Kitniyot (food made from legumes which are not eaten by Ashkenazim on Pesach) need not be sold. Utensils used for Chametz should not be sold.

IMPORTANT:  After submitting the form, you will receive an email from Rabbi Weiss confirming that your form has been processed. If for any reason you do not get the confirmation email, please contact the office for assistance.

  * Please check this box to confirm the following statement:

I hereby empower and authorize Rabbi Akiva Dovid Weiss to sell all Chametz that may be in my possession, wherever it may be - at home, business or elsewhere. This includes all goods which may be delivered to me over Passover as well as stocks owned in full or in part in corporations which sell or deal with Chametz. Rabbi Weiss has full rights to sell, dispose, and conduct all transactions, including rental of the store where the Chametz is stored and rental of right of way as he deems fit and proper, for such time which he believes necessary in accordance with detailed terms and forms explained in the contracts in his possession. The above power hereby being granted, is meant to conform with all Torah and Rabbinic regulations and laws, and also in accordance with the laws of the State of New York.

*Please Note: If you live in the dorms, there is a serious concern for the sale to be valid since students both do not legally own the space where the chametz is located, and access is also severely limited to outside parties - both of which can invalidate the sale. To circumvent both of these issues, Hillel at Binghamton is allowing students who live in the dorms to store their Chametz in our office in a storage area just for Chametz. Please bring your Chametz to the Hillel office in UUW-208B. It will be kept with the rest of Hillel's Chametz and repurchased after the holiday when it may then be picked up. If you need, we are happy to provide bags for you to store and bring your Chametz over to the office. On your form, please indicate the ADDRESS of your chametz as being: Hillel Office - New Union, Binghamton University, UUW-208B, Binghamton, NY 13902 - and the PLACE where it is stored is "Hillel Office Storage Room".

THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE SALE DEPENDS ON THE CHAMETZ BEING ACCESSIBLE TO THE NON-JEWISH PARTY TO WHOM IT IS SOLD. PLEASE CLEARLY INDICATE HOW THE CHAMETZ CAN BE ACCESSED FOR ALL OF PESACH.
